Pembroke Pines Commission To Talk North Perry Airport Safety

After two small plane crashes in just a matter of weeks, Pembroke Pines Commissioners are looking for answers on how to make North Perry Airport safer.

"Broward County Aviation had a master plan for that airport that called for about 260,000 annual take-offs and landings, or what they call operations at the airport. They exceeded 310,000 in the last year," and that increases the likelihood of some type of accident, says Vice Mayor Mike Hernandez.

The resolution commissioners are set to vote on tonight, if passed, would urge the FAA to investigate potential unsafe fight traffic at North Perry Airport and Broward County to conduct the study it promised years ago on lead in the air around the runways.

"If we don't work together, residents will feel cheated and will feel like they are in danger. I don't think that is right. There has to be a middle ground where we can address safety while preserving the economic activity that takes place at that airport," stresses Hernandez.

Four people who helped rescue those on board a small plane that crashed near North Perry last month will also receive Live Saving Awards tonight.
