LINK: Walk For The Animals This Weekend In Fort Lauderdale

Grab your sneakers and your pooch's leash because it's time to Walk for the Animals.

The 29th annual event is the Humane Society of Broward County's largest fundraiser of the year.

It's a 1.2-mile walk around Huizenga Park.

Well behaved dogs are encouraged to come with their owners, but older and overweight ones may want to skip this one out. Cats are also not invited.

The non-profit shelter's Cherie Wachter says the goal of Saturday's walk is to raise $660,000.

The money helps care for the thousands of animals they receive every year because their owners surrender them. "We also do surrender preventions. So just with the government shutdown recently, we supplied pet food to over 200 families that weren't getting a paycheck. And for some of those pets that were due for their vaccinations, we also did vaccinations. We didn't charge their families, and we eve scheduled some of those pets to have spay/neuter surgeries because they needed it." Wachter adds they also offer low-cost spay and neuter services, microchipping and an extensive education program to children and adults.

WIOD and our parent iHeart Media are proud partners of the Walk for the Animals.
